Fire engine thieves sentenced to prison

The pair that stole a fire engine and led police on a car chase from Sacramento to Butte County back in July were sentenced Oct. 18.

According to court documents, David Virgil Carcalete, 29, of North Highlands, pleaded no contest to the theft of a special vehicle and resisting a police officer.

His partner in the theft, Candice Lee Scollard, 35, of Quincy, pleaded no contest to the theft of a special vehicle and willfully evading a police officer.

Carcalete was sentenced to four years of jail. Half of his jail time will be served in the Butte County Jail, while the other two years will be served under probation.

Meanwhile, Scollard was sentenced to four years and eight months in state prison.

As part of the sentencing, Carcalete and Scollard must pay $112,973 in restitution to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department.

The joyride started when Carcalete stole a fire engine from the scene of a fire at Rio Linda on July 14.

Carcalete then proceeded to drive the fire engine on a two-hour chase from police, picking up Scollard along the way.

The pair drove from Sacramento through Placer and Yuba counties, all while they swapped seats inside the fire engine.

Carcalete and Scollard were finally caught by police in Butte County.
