School board takes steps to address Camp Fire changes

Planned projects, resolutions and the financial needs of Chico schools are all being considered in the aftermath of the Camp Fire.

The number of students who were displaced by the Camp Fire and how the school district is accommodating increased enrollment was addressed by members of the Butte County Board of Education at Wednesday night’s Chico School Board meeting.

“The biggest concern is what happens when we come back in January,” said Kathleen Kaiser, a Chico board member.

Two of the four resolutions passed Wednesday night were related to the effects of the Camp Fire on schools. The district's first interim budget proposal was approved with an eye toward funding Camp Fire-related  expenses.

“Our enrollment is changing while we speak,” said Kevin Bultema, Chico’s assistant superintendent. “These projected monetary numbers will likely look very different.”

New members who were elected to the board last month were introduced, and Linda Hovey was elected by the board to be its new president.
