Man found on burned property in Concow pleads not guilty


Alex Bettencourt was arrested on a property destroyed by the Camp Fire.

A San Jose man arrested Feb. 20 in Concow on theft and weapons charges entered pleas of not guilty in Butte County court last week.

Alex Bettencourt, 39, was arrested and charged with possession of firearms as a felon, theft and unlawfully manufacturing weapons.

According to a Feb. 21 news release by the Butte County Sheriff:
Two deputies responded to a call saying that there was a suspicious individual on a burned property on Granite Ridge Road in Concow.

They found a man camping with an array of weapons. He had in his possession a .357 revolver, a .22-calibre rifle and a shuriken (which is illegal in California).

Deputies also found a stolen Honda motorcycle valued at more than $950.

Bettencourt was charged with possession of a firearm as a felon, possession of a manufactured short-barreled rifle, possession of and manufacturing a shuriken, and stealing a motorcycle. Convicted felons are prohibited from possessing weapons and ammunition. 

After the hearing, Bettencourt was returned to the Butte County Jail. His bail was set at  $290,000. He's scheduled to be in court again on March 13.
