Thirty-two Chico community members joined together to share their thoughts on the Chico Scrap Metal relocation issue.
The Chico City Council came to a 4-3 decision Tuesday night to keep Chico Scrap Metal on East 20th Street.
Members of the council decided this was a no-win situation, either Chico Scrap Metal or Chapman-Mulberry neighborhoods would be forced to relocate.
“We were relying on the Chapman-Mulberry neighborhood plan. We would not have built all those houses just to put people by a scrap metal junk yard,” City Council Member Ann Schwab said.
The ratification was made to improve public safety, noise control, improve the aesthetics and remove airborne toxins and contamination from Chico Scrap Metal.
“If we force the business [Chico Scrap Metal] owner out then I fear it will turn into a parking lot. We would also be forcing them out of business realistically,” City Council Member Sean Morgan said.

More than 30 Chico community members shared their opinions on the issue. Half favored keeping the business location for an easy access to compost, while the other half expressed desire to relocate Chico Scrap Metal so they could have some peace and quiet.
