The Board of Supervisors approved to move new housing development forward along Stanley Avenue. |
The Butte County Board of Supervisors has decided Tuesday to move forward with developing a subdivision south of Chico.
The board approved developer Nels Leen’s plan in September. After an appeal, the issue was revisited Tuesday.
Leen’s initial plan was to build 21 homes on the south side of Stanley Avenue on 18 acres.
After hearing from several residents, the board came to a 4-1 decision to move the project forward but allow Leen to build 18 homes, rather than 21.
Residents told the board they oppose the plan because new homes will bring more people and more traffic, causing more backups along Dayton Road. They also argued that the area is not meant for urban development and there should be no more than one home placed on one acre, like the rest of the neighborhood.
In all, 22 opponents spoke about the issue for about two hours at the meeting.
“There is nothing about this development that reflects what these residents want,” said Karen Smith, a resident.
The developer is set to revise the plans and bring them back to the board before the end of the year.
