Two college students were taken to the hospital last weekend after a shooting that occurred at a party near downtown Chico.
The shooting happened Saturday night in the area of West Third Street and Cedar Street. When police responded just after 8 p.m., they found one of the victims, a young woman, had been shot in the chest. Officers then learned that the other victim had been driven to Enloe Hospital by his friends.
Following the shooting, the hospital went on lockdown as a precaution for the safety of patients and staff, representatives confirmed.
After an investigation, police discovered that the shooting was the result of two partygoers getting into a fight. During the confrontation, one of them reportedly pulled out a gun and fired several shots which then struck a nearby vehicle.
The woman was not involved in the initial confrontation and just happen to be there among hundreds of other people, according to a police report.
The investigation is ongoing, and the shooter remains unidentified at this time. Police are withholding the names of the victims.
One Chico State student at the party, who asked not to be identified, said that she was not surprised something like this happened because there were so many people there.
Both victims of the shooting were last reported to be in stable condition at Enloe Hospital, police said.
