City Council OKs grant to Jesus Center for emergency homeless shelters

The council discussed the possibility of allowing another local organization to run the shelter before voting 7-0.

The Jesus Center will receive a grant from the city to operate warming and cooling emergency centers.

The Chico City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow City Manager Mark Orme to finalize an agreement with the local nonprofit.

The grant was approved for up to $45,000, $15,000 for the 2018-2019 fiscal year and another $30,000 for the 2019-2020 year.

The center will serve as a shelter for the homeless during nights below 32 degrees or if there are two straight days of temperatures greater than 100 degrees.

According to Assistant City Manager Chris Constantin, city staff reached out to other local organizations as possible spots for emergency shelters, but the Jesus Center was the only one receptive to the idea.
