City Council postpones discussion about legalizing cannabis sales

The City Council stopped short Tuesday night of taking a first step toward allowing commercial cannabis sales in Chico.

Vice Mayor Alex Brown had prepared a presentation and recommendations for a new committee to research legalization.
“A majority of Chico voters voted in favor of Prop. 64,” Brown said. “Upwards of 50 percent of voters within the city voted for (cannabis) regulation within the city. Chico has waited long enough. It’s time.”

Brown planned to propose a committee of nine. The specific person for each position would have been decided later, after council review. The representative positions would have included:
  • A city council member
  • A law enforcement representative
  • A public health representative
  • A legal professional
  • A cannabis expert
  • A representative from Chico State
  • A representative from Chico schools
  • Two community members.
After the council considered three other hot-topic issues, a vote had to be taken to continue the meeting past 10 p.m. The vote failed 5-2, with only Brown and Councilmember Scott Huber voting in favor.

The issue will be the first discussion item at the next council meeting.
