A Chico Woman is suing Enloe Medical Center for medical malpractice and negligence, claiming negligent treatment during an abdominal surgery left her paraplegic.
Peggy Dyer is seeking compensatory damages for her injuries, pain and suffering and past and future medical expenses.
According to the lawsuit filed in Butte County Superior Court, Dyer was admitted to Enloe Medical Center in Chico on Nov. 23, 2016, and diagnosed with a hernia.
Doctors at Enloe placed an epidural catheter in Dyer for pain control five days after the surgery.
The catheter was removed and replaced on Dec. 6, 2016.
According to the suit, Dyer claims that due to negligent practice, this epidural catheter was not removed on time, which caused permanent paralysis.
She also claims that she was negligently provided medical, surgical, anesthesia and nursing care on multiple occasions.
One of the doctors, Dr. Suresh Pasya, responded to the suit by claiming the injuries and damages alleged by Dyer were caused by the natural course of disease or were the expected results of the treatment given.
Dyer also claims the hospital failed to obtain consent for the placement and replacement of the catheter and didn't offer less dangerous options for pain relief.
In his response to the suit, Dr. Frederick Collins says Dyer asked not to be told about risks from the procedure.
The case has been assigned to Judge Tamara L. Mosbarger. Trial dates have been set for next September.
