County hears proposal on groundwater management

The Butte County Water Commission is considering a proposal to merge groundwater basins.
The Butte County Water Commision heard a proposal to combine groundwater sub-basins in the county at its meeting Oct. 5, hoping it will give the county more money for conservation projects.

Paul Gosselin of the Department of Water and Resource Conservation told the board how combining basins would provide more money in the form of grants.

The current groundwater system in Butte County combines their basins with sub-basins in counties such as Colusa, Glenn, Tehama, Sutter and Shasta.

That means that water along the central valley in California is all shared within those counties so that water can be conserved.

The county needs around $1 million a year to help conserve its groundwater. Currently, it receives only $500,000 to help conserve water when combined with other county sub-basins.

Gosselin said his department will apply for a $1 million grant before Nov. 13.
