Accidental shooting leads police to hit-and-run suspect

An altercation on Nov. 1 that quickly turned violent, ending in an accidental shooting, led Chico police to the suspect of a hit-and-run that occurred earlier that day.

Police have arrested Danny Salazar, 18. of Chico, and charged him with possession of a loaded firearm, possession of an illegal shotgun, careless discharge of a gun and fleeing the scene of a collision.

Here's what happened, according to police:

Abound 4 p.m., multiple officers responded to a call about two men involved in a fight at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of W. Sacramento Ave.

Officers spotted Tristyn Jones, 19, of Chico, walking near the complex, his face covered in blood. Jones was detained and determined to be involved in the fight.

As he was being questioned, officers heard a gunshot coming from the apartment complex. A man appeared with wounds and blood on him. He was treated by medics at the scene and was later checked out at a nearby hospital.

Investigators determined that Jones and the man had fought, and the man went to get an illegally-owned shotgun behind the apartment complex dumpster.

As he returned to look for Jones, the shotgun accidentally went off, nicking the side of his leg.

According to police call logs, officer Miranda Pierce and Daniel Wilson responded to a hit-and-run earlier that day and recognized the injured man as the same person who had hit multiple parked cars earlier in the day.

Salazar was taken to Butte County jail. Bail has been set at $36,000.
