City Council Votes Against Outdoor Marijuana

The Chico City Council voted to create an indoor marijuana cultivation regulation plan at a public hearing on Oct. 17.

Council members voted between two options:
  1. Continue discussing outdoor cultivation before banning it
  2. Prohibit outdoor cannabis and begin drafting a plan for only indoor cannabis cultivation.
The council voted 4-3 in favor of option two.

Prior to the vote, several citizens debated between outdoor and indoor grows and questioned whether the council fully understood the cannabis industry.

“You don’t grow an industrial product for medicine inside. There’s not really a lot of consistency there,” citizen Evan Sanders said. “It doesn’t makes sense because it’s expensive and wasteful.”

“I am dismayed that some people representing me in my local government find it acceptable to disregard sustainability when shaping policy,” citizen Jared Geiser said, “so I strongly urge to continue to allow outdoor cultivation of marijuana.”

“Chico could be the Napa Valley of marijuana if you guys had any sense,” citizen Dan Everhart said.

City Council members will hold another public hearing on Nov. 7 to adopt a plan for indoor cannabis regulations.
