City Council adds new taproom category to building codes

Chico residents might see more taprooms around the city in the near future.

The City Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to amend Title 19 to allow a new land use category, manufacturer taprooms. This would allow businesses the freedom to have a taproom onsite in districts where they otherwise could not, without also offering food.

Previously, the city code allowed beverage production in areas zoned for manufacturing but establishments that serve alcohol were not allowed. Tasting rooms were permitted in those zones, but the definition of "tasting room" limits serving of alcohol to small quantities only.

Mike Sawley, city planner, said Secret Trail Brewing Company requested that the code be amended so it could open a taproom on Meyers street and serve typical quantities of alcoholic beverages without having to invest in a commercial kitchen.
