Chico man arrested on Pleasant Valley campus

A man was arrested about noon on Oct. 9 after refusing a traffic stop and running onto the Pleasant Valley High School campus, according to Chico police.

In custody is David McClain, 43, who has been charged with resisting arrest.

According to police, here's what happened:

Chico Police Sgt. Todd Leftowitz attempted to pull over McClain’s car after witnessing reckless driving.  The driver did not stop but turned onto Marigold Avenue and got out of his car before running onto Pleasant Valley High School campus.

According to Lefkowitz, the man was speaking unintelligible words.

“When I pulled up to him he was yelling, ‘It’s all about drugs. Drugs are bad, we have to go after him!’” Leftowitz said during an interview.

The man later told the sergeant that when he ran onto campus he got scared because he didn’t want to get into more trouble than he already knew he was in.

Leftowitz eventually caught the man and arrested him.

Lisa Billingsley, Pleasant Valley faculty member, said the campus was on lockdown during the incident.

“It was during lunch. We were on lockdown for about three to four minutes,” Billingsley said. “No students saw the incident, and the code red went very smoothly. We had campus supervisors in different spots the whole time.”

Chico police noted that McClain already had a warrant out for a felony arrest. He remains in the Butte County Jail in Oroville.
