The initial stages of building a $60 million student housing complex on Nord Avenue could begin as early as December and be finished by the fall of 2018.
That’s according to Carol Schwartz, a senior project manager for AMCAL Multi-Housing, Inc., who presented blueprints of the project to the Chico Architectural Review and Historic Preservation board on Tuesday. A four-story, two-building structure, the complex will have 173 units, house more than 600 residents and be located between Nord and Columbus avenues, just north of Walgreens.
“We’re really looking forward to being able to provide a needed resource and to help a community kind of change and develop, so that everyone is going to benefit,” Schwartz said.
The board approved minor conditional recommendations for the company’s proposal, including changes to the building’s signage and materials for a fence that would deter vandalism.
Before the construction begins, Schwartz said, AMCAL needs to obtain several permits, including one to demolish the building currently occupying the space.
