Local man arrested for attempted murder, burglary

A suspected burglar is in custody after stabbing a Chico man in his apartment on April 23.

Jessie Phillips, 39, called 911 to report an intruder had broken through a glass door into his apartment. The suspect was armed with a knife, according to a Chico Police Department news release.

Chico Police entered the 2700 block of Amanda Way to find Phillips struggling with Petty.

At 5:05 p.m., Chico Police responded to Phillips’ call and found him struggling with the suspect, Darin Jay Petty, 49 of 2701 Amanda Way.

Phillips managed to wrestle Petty to the ground. Officers then pulled Phillips away and arrested Petty while he continued to resist, the news release stated.

During the fight, Phillips was stabbed in his upper chest and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was later released.

Darin Petty is accused of breaking through the glass door to enter Phillips’ apartment.

The break in occurred in the early evening as many residents of Chico Commons apartments were returning home.

Daniel Winlow, a resident of Chico Commons, was driving into the parking lot with his son when the police cars arrived.

“We saw all the police cars as we drove in so we just stayed in the car until it was all over,” Winlow said. “There were a lot of police and the kids around here haven’t been able to stop talking about it.”

Virginia Hernandez, another resident, was visiting with her granddaughter when police arrived. “There are a lot of kids around here, so this kind of thing is scary to think of,” she said.

Chico Commons is located on Amanda Way in Chico, across the street from Little Chico Creek Elementary School.
