City Council addresses future of El Rey Theatre

The Chico City Council discussed Tuesday night whether it could do something to save the 110-year-old El Rey Theatre.

The El Rey Theatre was discussed on
Tuesday at the City Council meeting.
The Council discussed the possibility of the downtown theater being placed on Chico’s historical landmark list because artwork inside was painted  by Chico State students the year the theater opened. Other possibilities were mentioned, such as the community raising money to buy the theater.

Many Chico residents attended the meeting and spoke about fond memories at the El Rey, reasons why it should be saved and how much it meant to the community.

“When I think of Chico, I think of the El Rey,” said Shannon Miller, a four-year Chico resident.

A representative from the El Rey Theatre Alliance, Lisa D. West, said she hopes the theater can be saved.
