Lindo Channel housing plan raises fire access concerns

The Chico Planning Commission approved a plan for new development at the Estates of Lindo Channel on Thursday night on a 5-2 vote.

The development is located at 1511 Manzanita Ave. The plans entail rezoning the property from medium density residential to low density, and also dividing the site into 22 lots for single-family residences.

People at the meeting voiced concerns about the placement of a fire road serving the development.

“We feel very impacted by the project of course,” said neighbor Pete Hollingsworth, “The fire access road will be coming right next to us.”

Other residents told the commission they are concerned that access to Lindo Channel poses the danger of children going into the channel where homeless individuals live.

“The reality is the fire access road is really going to be the public access to the channel,” Hollingsworth told the commission.

Residents asked about the possibility of relocating this access from the west side of the cul-de-sac to the east. This was the first time this idea was presented, so the project engineers need to see if this would be feasible.
