More Chico public schools will get midmorning snacks next year

The Chico school board has voted to expand Second Chance Breakfast.
Second Chance Breakfast will be expanded to all Chico public secondary schools beginning next school year. The Chico Unified School Board voted unanimously Wednesday to expand the program.

Students in the program receive an extra midmorning break to get a healthy snack or meal. It currently serves 200 meals a year at both Chico High School and Marsh Junior High. Students can prepay or get the snack as a free- or reduced- price meal option like other school food programs.

Second Chance Breakfast will generate an extra $105,000 of reimbursement revenue to the district's Nutrition Services program if all secondary schools are added. This will reduce the general fund contribution by the same amount.

“I can’t explain it, but with this program, lunch purchases have gone up, so we’ll get a return back on our investment,” said Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Kevin Bultema.
