Community leaders held press conference, discuss public safety

Police departments and local community leaders met for a press conference at the Old Municipal Building.

In the wake of the presidential election results and reported incidents of violence around the country, Chico police and community leaders met on November 16, at the Old Municipal Building to discuss public safety.

Chico Police Chief Michael O’Brien said that with reports ranging from racial slurs to water bottles being thrown at people there are some in the community that have feelings of insecurity and vulnerability.

The meeting also served as a reminder that we need to come together as a community and report hate crimes and acts of violence, according to O’Brien.

He encouraged people who have been victims of hate crimes to contact the police.

“It will help if individuals come forward and make the reports,” O’Brien said. “If we don’t know about it, then it is hard for us to do something about it.”
